so and so said it - and Gandhi did it .
Lord Krishna asked Arjun to fight against Kaurawas in Mahabharat the great war and finally convinced Arjun to fight for the cause of right and justice ;Gandhi learned it in Gita and fought with the same intent in South Africa and in India against English people but without any violence, having all love and compassion to English People . He followed Gita - to fight for the right cause but in a novel spirit of non-violence and proved to the world that he was the worst enemy and the best friend to English people in India . He followed both the Gita and the Bible at the same time i.e 1- fight for the Right and 2 - love your enemy (ironically)
Tulasidas in Ramcharitmanas said - Ram the son of Dashrath ,king of Ayoddhya was GOD /Brahma ;the Universal Soul and Gandhi accepted this without any argument that RajaRam (King Ram) was GOD and became fearless(Fearlessness one of his eleven ashram -vows that had to be fallowed by all in ashram ). Had Gandhi been a philosopher (like Shankaracharya or Immanuel Kant) he would have never been accepted this so blindly (as suggested by Tulasidas ) and to our good understanding this Raja Ram helped him throughout his life ,in struggle and in success as he declares himself in his autobiography 'My Experiment With Truth " . This Ram is the Truth personified for Gandhi and HIS life is the source of all moral ,social and all cardinal Indian virtues that Gandhi applied in his life (Gandhi had read only Gita and Ramcharitmanas of all Indian scriptures like great Vedas and Upnishads the great philosphical treatises . Gandhi's dream was to establish RAM_RAJY in India same to Best of Communism but ruled by human virtues than that of money in communism .
" रघुपति राघव राजाराम .पतितपावन सीताराम " -- और - " तू ही राम है तू रहीम है तू करीम कृष्ण खुदा हुआ ;तू ही वाहे गुरु तू इसूमसीह हर नाम में तू समा रहा " .( Means all the names of God in all the Religions are but different languages ;Gandhi calls Him - 'Ram'
" Disobedience is the true foundation of liberty. The obedient is a slaves.
As a single footstep will not make a path on the earth, so a single thought will not make a pathway in the mind. To make a deep physical path, we walk again and again. To make a deep mental path, we must think over and over the kind of thoughts we wish to dominate our lives. As you simplify your life, the laws of the universe will be simpler; solitude will not be solitude, poverty will not be poverty, nor weakness weakness." -Henry David Thoreau .
These are some of the lines that Gandhi fallowed of Thoreau, the American thinker for his Civil -disobedience word and practiced in India but excluded Thoreau's idea of use of violence and called it Nonviolent -civil -disobedience (savinay awgyaaandolan ).
“I choose my physician and my clergyman, thus indicating my sense of the quality of their work.” By all means, also, choose your bricklayer; that is the proper reward of the good workman, to be “chosen.” The natural and right system respecting all labour is, that it should be paid at a fixed rate, but the good workman employed, and the bad workman unemployed. The false, unnatural, and destructive system is when the bad workman is allowed to offer his work at half-price, and either take the place of the good, or force him by his competition to work for an inadequate sum. " -- J.Ruskin from Unto This Last . Gandhi followed Ruskin and talked of Dignity of Labour (one of his eleven Ashram vows)
Tolstoy, Romain Rolland and J.Ruskin deeply influenced his life. Gandhi admitted: "I derived great inspiration from ‘Unto this last' by Ruskin and his concept that good individual is contained in the good of all". The concept of Sarvodaya and Antyodaya were the products of this influence. Following Ruskin, Gandhi stated: "Whenever you are in doubt or when the self becomes too much with you, apply the following test: 'Recall the face of the poorest and the weakest man whom you may have seen and ask yourself if the step you contemplate is going to be of any use to him. Will he gain anything by it? In other words, will it lead to Swaraj for the hungry and spiritually starving millions?’ then you will find your doubts and your self melting away." Tolstoy wrote his famous book 'The Kingdom Of God Is Within You’, which Gandhi followed and called it his ‘inner voice. But in essence it connotes conscience or conviction. (Gandhi's Human Touch a lecture by Madhu Dandwate )
Gandhi had great respect to 'Sermon On The Mount' and took it to his heart that it convinced him to be a Christian and he quoted and practiced in his life but the Christians thought these, mere a theory to be realized in some other worlds of God-Men .
Gandhi followed the theory of brotherhood and sacrifice in Quoran ;theory of compassion and oneness of Lord Bauddha and theory of Non-violence in Jainism and so on and so forth .Gandhi ,therefore was through and through a follower with all humility .He never claimed to be a leader but it seems to be right that the best follower is the great leader . Theories of many great men ,he took to action and successfully executed them and proved to be right and true .Really this was the novel and excellent contribution to GREAT HUMAN THOUGHTS , IN ACTION .
